I had to wait nearly a week in Kaikoura for suitable conditions to go out and see the sperm whales but it was well worth it in the end. I was able to fill in my time walking in the Kaikoura Ranges behind, so the wait was not too frustrating!
The guys who run the boats seem to know within a few seconds when the whales are about to dive.
